Placenta praevia

Placenta praevia

Placenta praevia is a condition when your afterbirth attaches in the lower part of your womb, sometimes completely covering the neck of the womb. The diagnosis is reserved for the third trimester. This can cause heavy bleeding during pregnancy or at the time of birth. Therefore, the mode of delivery is a planned caesarean section, sometimes weeks before your estimated due date.

The diagnosis may be very distressing for expectant mothers. Being well informed may help you feel calm and safe. These are some tips:

  • Have your hospital bag ready from 28 weeks onwards

  • Always have a plan how to get to the nearest hospital whenever and wherever you are

  • Wear a pad to be able to monitor the bleeding

  • Call an ambulance in case of a heavy bleeding

  • Always have your pregnancy notes with you

  • Choose a high risk obstetrician who is confident in managing such cases within an expert team and who is always available to review remotely the bleeding episodes with you

All will be well when it is planned appropriately!!!
